Well, as anybody from india who is living in usa can attribute, the ethinic troubles of describing yourself is quite a hassle. If you say, you are an "indian
", it would very well represent American Indians (a.k.a Native Americans). If you say, you are an "East Indian
", it historically represents pretty much everything that British used to occupy.. (incl. a whole bunch of nations).
Official US Census just lumps everyone as "Asians". [Links: General Ethnic Classifications

]. Apparently, close to 1.8 millions claim to be "Asian Indians" living here.
Hence, my ethinicity is Asian Indian..
